Subject: Is there a Caveman Inside You?
Dear Friend,
Here's Part 3 of the f-r-e-e Newsletter series you requested:
Simple New Brain Science Unlocks Your Health and Happiness!
Last time, we talked about James Bond. Did you miss that email? You can read it at www.NeuroBalanceNow.com/NeuroNews2.htm .
Have you ever heard the following definition? “Stress: The confusion created when one’s mind overrides the body’s desire to choke the living daylights out of somebody who desperately needs it!”
This wry saying definition has a kernel of truth in it. How did we get to such a place of being at odds with ourselves?
Let’s take a trip into our past and watch the inner workings of Grog, the primitive caveman. We observe Grog stalking prey in the jungle one fine morning. He is hungry and his spear is at the ready.
Out of the corner of his eye he sees movement. His brain makes a quick decision, far faster than he can think. The decision is simple: “Do I eat it or is it going to eat me?”
Grog is having roasted rabbit today. So is his family.
After he has eaten his fill of rabbit, he takes an afternoon nap. Suddenly he hears the roar of a Sabertooth tiger. Before he even realizes he’s awake, he throws his spear. Then he grabs his daughter and runs as if their life depends on it – because it does.
Fortunately, the injured Sabertooth tiger retreats and his family is safe. Once again, without a moment’s hesitation, Grog’s brain has correctly answered the question: “Do I eat it or is it going to eat me?”
Your brain was designed for this “primitive” environment. To this day there’s a part of your brain that still asks the question, “Do I eat it or is it going to eat me?”
So, let’s teach Grog some English and some manners. Let’s also put him in a suit and give him a career. Does his Armani and his MBA turn off the part of his brain that tries to determine “Do I eat it or is it going to eat me?”
Nope. Even as Grog (AKA Greg) is called into his difficult boss’s office for a tongue-lashing, his brain is asking, “Do I eat my boss or is my boss going to eat me?”
Obviously, this is not the best question to be asking. So Greg’s brain has to burn through its stores of brain chemicals (neurotransmitters) to keep from “choking the living daylights out of somebody who desperately needs it.”
Your brain is BUILT to show such restraint every now and then. However, in our modern, fast paced civilization, we are asked to show EXTREME restraint, day in and day out.
Year after year such demands eventually draw down your reserves of neurotransmitters until one day your neurotransmitter account is overdrawn. No more neurotransmitters!
What’s the penalty charge? Greg starts to have trouble sleeping. And trouble keeping his cool. He starts yelling at people. He does not like himself much anymore. And other people are not as cooperative and friendly toward him. His career stalls. His wife leaves him. His kids become uncooperative.
Now Greg is caught in a vicious cycle of stress leading to more stress.
What can he do to turn things around? How can he feel better about himself? How can he feel calm and alert instead of threatened and exhausted?
I’m sure that if you’ve been following these emails, you have some advice for Greg. What would you tell him?
